Abstract

Many Indonesian students find it difficult to learn English. In addition, the conventional English learning process in the classroom is still dominated by textbook learning. Therefore, this study offers and alternative online platform to learn the language by using Duolingo application, which provides an active and more enthusiastic learning atmosphere. More specifically, this study aims to investigate the effect of the Duolingo application on English writing outcomes of the seventh grade students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah 2 Bojonegoro. The research method used in this study is mix-method research approach, by applying the pre-experimental research method, namely One Group Pretest Posttest. The results of this study indicate that there is positive impact of using Duolingo application on the English writing process of seventh grade students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah 2 Bojonegoro. The statistical analysis demonstrates that there is a significant improvement of the average score before the students use Duolingo is 58,097 and after students use Duolingo that greater than before, 62,0968. It can also be proven from linearity test value, P-value > 0,05 (0,060 > 0,05), the large effect of Duolingo application on students’ English writing outcomes which has been also calculated the hypothesis test, which is the value of sig. 0,003 < 0,05. This means that using Duolingo application has significantly improved by the students’ English writing outcomes because it offers an interactive and fun learning environment.
