Abstract

Reading is basic foundation for learning and reading habit is one of factors that influence reading comprehension. This study was a quantitative research with expost facto design which aims to find out the level of reading habit and reading comprehension of eleventh graders of SMAN 1 Ambarawa in the academic year of 2021/2022, and to find out whether there is or there is no significant influence of students’ reading habit towards students’ reading comprehension. 31 students of XIMIPA-2 were taken as the samples in this study through cluster sampling. A questionnaire was distributed to measure students’ reading habit and a reading comprehension test was distributed to measure students’ reading comprehension. The SPSS 24 Software was used to analyze the data and it found that students’ reading habit is on a good level as well as students’ reading comprehension with the mean of 73.87 and 74.58 respectively. The result obtained using simple linear regression analysis showed that there is a significant influence of students’ reading habit towards students’ reading comprehension since the tcount is more than ttable (3.473 >2.045). Furthermore, the regression equation Y = 0.080 + 1.009X expressed there was 1.009 point increase in students’ reading comprehension for every 1 point increase in students’ reading habit. It implied the higher students’ reading habit, the higher students’ reading comprehension. The contribution of students’ reading habit in influencing students’ reading comprehension is 29.4% and the rest is influenced by other factors that are not discussed in this study
