Abstract

This paper is based on the two main research objectives which aimed to find out whether the use of the toPhonetics application is effective or not to improve English pronunciation skills and to find out whether or not the toPhonetics application is more effective than the conventional method to improve English pronunciation skills. Quasi-experimental research design with a quantitative research method took the second-semester of English education students of Universitas Negeri Semarang to participate in this research. Two classes were taken as the research sample of this research, consisting of 82 students from both groups. The procedures of collecting the data were the try-out, the pre-test, the treatments, and the last one was the post-test. IBM SPSS 25 output results showed the mean post-test of the experimental group was 76.68, while the control group was 71.59 (76.68 > 71.59). The value of Sig. (2-tailed) of the Paired Samples T-Test in the experimental group was lower than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05) which means that there was a significant difference of the English pronunciation skills after the treatments by using the toPhonetics application were given. Moreover, the Independent Samples T-Test analysis computation showed that the sig. value (2-tailed) was lower than 0,05 (0.008 < 0.05), and the result of tvalue was higher than ttable (2.714 > 1.664). In conclusion, the toPhonetics application was able to give a significant difference in improving the students’ English pronunciation skills, and it also proved that the toPhonetics application was more effective than the conventional method.
