Abstract

This study aims to explore and evaluate the effectiveness of Duolingo application for teaching English vocabulary in rural area. By using quasi-experimental design, this quantitative research invited the tenth-grade students of a senior high school in the academic year of 2021/2022 to participate in the project actively. The samples of this study were two classes of tenth grade SMA Negeri 1 Bantarkawung which were divided into the experimental group and the control group. The pre-test and post-test are the research instruments for measuring the significant difference before and after the implementation. The t-test analysis showed that the experimental group achieves better than the control group. The p-value of independent sample t-test was 0.001, and it was less than 0.050. It means there is a significant difference in students' vocabulary knowledge between experimental group and control group. Specifically, Duolingo application possibly can enhance students’ vocabulary in terms of meaning, form, and use. In addition, the effect size formulation is useful to measure the effectiveness of treatment or experimental stage, and it has modest effect. Therefore, it can be safely concluded that Duolingo application appears to be effective for teaching and improving students’ English vocabulary
