Abstract

Pragmatics is very important in communication to understand how language is used in a particular context and be able to use it appropriately. Speech acts are one of the fields of pragmatics. It denotes human action in language and pragmatics concentrates on the way in which individuals act through their speech. This thesis discussed the expressive speech acts contained in the film "Love, Rosie". This topic was chosen because films can be role models for students in expressing expressive speech acts through native conversations. This study used qualitative methods and the data were analyzed descriptively. In this study, the data were analyzed using the expressive act theory of Searle (1976). The findings of this study found 55 utterances containing expressive speech acts which can be classified into: five utterances of expressive speech acts of gratitude (9.1%), eight utterances of expressive speech acts of apologizing (14.5%), five utterances of expressive speech acts. congratulation (9.1%), eighteen expressive speech acts of greeting (32.7%), seven expressions of wishing (12.7%) and twelve attitude expressive speech acts (21.8%). Expressive speech act is used to express feeling and attitude about something such as, asking for an apology, thanking someone, and congratulating someone. The students are expected to apply language appropriately and effectively, not only speech act theory to convey linguistic rules related to speech.
