Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the teaching and learning process. During the pandemic, schools are required to conduct distance learning. Some teachers take advantage of the use of the WhatsApp as a learning tool. WhatsApp is an instant messaging application which can be installed in smartphone device. It has become one of the applications commonly used by teachers as a learning tool. WhatsApp has various features that can be used in the learning process, such as attaching images or videos, sharing voice messages, sharing documents, sharing web-links, and etc. However, the implementation of WhatsApp as an online learning tool also has obstacles such as not all students participating in WhatsApp group class, some were passive, and some did not appear during the learning activities. The aim of this study is to investigate students’ perception and motivation in learning English by using WhatsApp as an E-learning tool. This research applied the quantitative survey method. The sample was 143 students at SMA Negeri 1 Wiradesa in Pekalongan regency. This research adopted variables from Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Self�Determination Theory (SDT). The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire. The questionnaire contained 26 items and was measured using a 5-point Likert scale. I found that most of the respondents show positive responses to learning English through WhatsApp. Students had a positive perception in learning English using WhatsApp with the mean score of perceived ease of use is 3.85 and perceived usefulness is 3.65. In addition, this study revealed that students are also high motivated to learn English through WhatsApp with the mean score of intrinsic motivation is 3.68 and extrinsic motivation is 3.77. In conclusion, students perceived WhatsApp as a suitable E-learning tool. Students also believed that learning English through WhatsApp can be useful for their future
