Abstract

English is taught in Indonesian schools as a compulsory subject. There are four main skills to master which are writing, reading, listening, and speaking. There are also various kinds of texts which are taught in schools such as descriptive, recount, narrative, etc. In term of reading, the teacher should know how to deliver the meaning or message that is represented in the text. However, the students also need to have the ability to interpret the meaning of the text. This phenomenon has become the reason this study being conducted. The researcher selected two narrative texts taken from the 10th grade’s English textbook published by The Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia (2017 Curriculum Revised Edition) and analysed the three metafunctions based on the theory proposed by Halliday to find out the Interpersonal, Ideational, and Textual meanings of the selected narrative texts. This study is a qualitative study in which the researcher used documentation method and provide the interpretation of the findings. The results of the analyses showed that the dominant MOOD type found in the texts is Declarative Mood (86.6%), the dominant Participant is Actor (24.7%), the dominant Process is Material Process (49.2%), the dominant Circumstance is Circumstance of Location (53.6%), and the dominant Theme used in the texts is Unmarked Topical Theme (51.6%). The findings revealed that all the three meanings realised in the selected narrative texts indicated that the texts have fulfilled the criteria of narrative texts.
