Abstract
Communication is one of the essential parts in the implementation of curriculum 2013 in Indonesia especially in English language learning. Students are required to be more active in classroom Activity. Therefore, having high level of willingness to communicate (WTC) is essential for them. WTC is conceptualized as the readiness of the speaker to speak using target language when free to do so. This study aims to investigate the factors affecting students’ WTC and the reasons behind such factors. The participants of the study were 11th graders of language major of SMA N 1 BOJA. The researcher chooses this school because it is one out of two senior high schools in Kendal Regency that still runs Language major. And also, English language teaching and learning system in this school is quite good since it used to be an RSBI school (International Standard School Stub). The main instruments used in this study were observation to figure out the general picture of classroom activity, questionnaire consists of questions relatedto the English language learning activity to know the factors affecting students’ WTC and interview questions to find out the reasons behind such factors. The present study is a qualitative case study. The data was collected through Google Form and Whatsapp voice call for the interview. The result of the study is the explanation of the factors affect students’ WTC and the reasons causing such factors. There are several factors such as: task type, topic of discussion, interlocutors and role of teacher personality, speaking proficiency and fear of negative evaluation proven to affect students’ WTC
