Abstract

This present study attempted to examine the manipulation of text practised in the English novel written by Mark Twain: The Adventure of Tom Sawyer to Indonesian. The study aims to show whether the translator made certain manipulation in the translation text to fill the cultural and ideological gap between the source text and the target text. The study belongs to a descriptive qualitative study in which it identified the text manipulation made by the translator in translating to Indonesian. The analysis process was incorporated with the text-internal manipulation arranged by Dukate (2007) to extract any word, phrase, clause, sentence, and paragraph which denoted the occurrence of manipulation. The result of these examinations indicated that there 6 (six) types of text-internal manipulation performed in the Indonesian translation text. The most frequent type of manipulation is conscious handling in which the translator mainly applied manipulation technique reduction, which was proposed by Molina and Albir (2002), to manipulate the target text. It can be inferred that the translator mostly performed manipulation by omitting the source text due to cultural and linguistic considerations
