Abstract

This study aims to show the mastery of ninth graders in pronouncing diphthongs and explain the diphthong sounds that are difficult to pronounce by the students. The pronunciation learning system in Indonesia has received less attention because of the lack of speaking practice in front of the class or the teacher's lack of awareness of students' pronunciation. Pronunciation lessons are important for correcting students' mistakes. If mispronunciations are not corrected as early as possible, they will continue to make mistakes until adults. Students rarely notice that there are diphthongs when they pronounce a word. They often ignore the sound of diphthongs; however, diphthongs are also important to avoid mispronunciation because of limited time at school and home. This research used descriptive qualitative descriptive as the technique. The data was collected by testing and interviewing the ninth-grade students. From the test results of 60 students, 90.9% of them had difficulty pronouncing the centering diphthongs, and 68.4% had difficulty pronouncing closing diphthongs. Although most of them had difficulty pronouncing the centering diphthong, the most difficult diphthong for the students was the closing diphthong. All students could not pronounce the diphthong /əʊ/ correctly. Some students did not find it difficult when read the words that the researcher had given. Many students who didn't know the word's meaning felt that it was hard. They thought that they should learn more about good pronunciation. Some of them felt familiar with the words that had been provided, and some were not. They also didn't know about diphthongs. They had never even heard of diphthongs before. English lessons were challenging because there were too many verbs, but they also did not know the meaning of some of the words they read, and they did not know how to read them
