Abstract

The difficulties of the students in learning English include the aspect of the vocabulary itself. The students had difficulty remembering the word, spelling, and understanding the meaning of the words. This research is based on the student's problems with English, especially in mastering vocabulary. The aim of this research is to identify the use of the word wall method that can improve students' vocabulary mastery. A quasi-experimental design is used to collect the data. The researcher takes the seventh-grade students of SMPN 2 SUSUKANLEBAK as an object of the research. The data are obtained through a pre-test and post-test. The pre-test is used to measure the students' previous ability in memorizing vocabulary, the treatment applies materials through the word wall method, and the post-test is used to find out the students’ vocabulary after giving the treatment. The result of the analysis shows that word walls can improve students' vocabulary mastery. It can be seen by the difference in the mean score between the pre-test and post-test. The result of the study was found that the post-test mean score of the experimental class was 70.77 while the post-test mean score of the control class was 62.11. Then the data of both tests are analyzed by using the T-test, and the result shows that the T-test value of 5.71 is greater than the T-table value of 1.99 which could be concluded that the t-value > t-table. It can be inferred that the word wall method is very effective in improving students' vocabulary mastery.
