Abstract

In Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG), Ideational Meaning has the function to represent the speaker’s experience, what’s going on, by whom, and in what circumstance. Recount text is the type of text that retells past experiences or events. Then, Error Analysis is a method used to investigate errors in second language acquisition. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the realization of ideational meaning in students’ recount texts and investigate the students’ errors in writing recount texts. The descriptive qualitative method is used in this study with six recount texts written by tenth-grade students of class MIPA 4 SMAN 1 Tanjung, Brebes, Central Java as the objects of the study. With the transitivity analysis, the result shows that the material process become the dominant process in the texts (55.6%) followed by the material participants –actor (31.3%) and goal (16.6%) which dominated the texts, and circumstance location (82.2%) mainly happened in the students’ recount texts. In the field of error analysis, which used Surface Strategy Taxonomy by Dulay et al. (1982), shows there are 44 errors found in this study which are categorized as Omission (11.4%), Additions (2.3%), Misinformation (84.1%), and Misordering (2.3%). The main error in this study was misinformation which happened mostly in the process of ideational meaning (61.4%) followed by misinformation in participants (13.6%) and circumstances (9.1%). Finally, this study is expected to develop an understanding of ideational meaning for both the teacher and the students. For the teacher, mastering ideational meaning will help in the process of teaching recount texts. For the students, it can develop their ability in writing recount texts and avoid errors.
