Abstract

Politicians and public figures have used speeches as an important tool to influence other people to think and act. This study aims to investigate the transitivity processes employed in Jacinda Ardern's speech and their functions related to her political agenda. This study uses Systemic Functional Grammar as its conceptual as well as methodological framework. The object of the study was a speech delivered by Jacinda Ardern as the Prime Minister of New Zealand in the general debate of the 73rd session of the general assembly of United Nations in New York, 28th September 2018. The results show two findings based on the analysis. First, there are 278 clauses containing transitivity process. Jacinda Ardern has employed all process of transitivity and the most used process is material process as 43.8%. It is followed by relational process ass 32.4%, mental process as 15.5%, verbal process as 4.3%, existential process as 3%, and behavioral process as 1%. Second, each process has their own functions in representing the speaker's intention. In addition, there are some concerns found in the speech, they are international cooperation, natural resources and environmental management, equality, government roles, and national unity. Those concerns are under the concept of global leadership and shared responsibilities for creating peaceful, equitable, and sustainable society
