Abstract

Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) is anxiety when facing challenges during learning any foreign language, including English, especially when it comes to speaking activities. FLA has come differently during the Covid-19 pandemic as traditional classroom learning has shifted to emergency remote learning, which may affect their FLA level. Therefore, this study aims to discover students’ anxiety levels along with the factors that cause their anxiety during online speaking activities, to share the strategies carried out by the students, as well as the strategies for the English teacher in reducing students’ FLA during online speaking activities. This study used Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) questionnaire and an interview to obtain the data. 34 eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Tangerang were recruited as the participants. The results show that the activity of speaking in online class tends to make the students feel more relaxed. The factors that cause their anxiety are: 1) lack of preparation, 2) feeling of inferiority, 3) lack of confidence, 4) worried about making mistakes, 5) worried about being laughed at, 6) worried about the bad internet signal, and 7) worried about missing out on the material. The students carried out several strategies to address the anxiety, such as watching movies in English, reviewing the meaning of a new vocabulary, practicing speaking with family members, taking an English course, staying away from bullies, preparing some words in advance, relaxing and speaking slowly, and believing in their self-confidence. There are also strategies for the English teacher: speaking in both English and Bahasa Indonesia, explaining the lesson in more detail, giving students some time to prepare, less intimidating the students and speaking gently, correcting students’ mistakes clearly, and admonishing the students who laugh at other students.
