Abstract

This study is about the roles of high school teacher in E-learning. This study aims to find out teachers‟ roles about the practice of using E-learning, to investigate teachers‟ perspective about the importance of ICT in E-learning, and to find out supporting and inhibiting factors of teachers‟ role using E-learning for teaching and learning. A qualitative approach was used as a method of this study. There was data collection in the form of questionnaires, interviews, and documentations addressed to ten respondents consisting of English teachers from three schools in Temanggung. This study concluded; first, research result identified three main roles of teachers in online learning context: a cognitive role, an affective role and a managerial role. Furthermore these roles did not seem to have the same effects in E-learning as well as their relationship in an activity-dominated English course. Cognitive role is the most mastered by the teacher in E-learning. While the recordkeeping of the online exercise, the learning content, and the learning method were still lacking in mastery. It means that the managerial role in online learning was the last role that is least mastered by the teacher. Second, Technologies and tools that is used in this online learning activity such as laptops, computers, mobile phones, and several applications such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, and Youtube. Teachers also use Learning Management System (LMS) Moodle and Microsoft 365, which was facilitated by the government for free. Other websites often used by teachers were Jakarta Post, BBC Learning, and Academia Edu. Third, the supporting factors of E-learning were the facilities by the Government such modules, other learning platforms, and quotas. Another factor was making easier in teaching and learning process; increasing students‟ motivation; improving teachers‟ professional competence. Unfortunately, the training is still lacking in delivering learning materials with effective methods. Another inhibiting factor was the students and their environment. There were some students with the difficult access of internet in Temanggung, so the online teaching and learning were not effectiv
