Abstract

This study aimed to find out the level and types of students’ motivation in learning English during the study-from-home policy. 35 students of SMA Muhammadiyah Wonosobo were recruited to participate in this study by using a random sampling technique. This study was a descriptive-qualitative study. The data which were used in this study were collected through survey and interviews. 35 students filled out the questionnaire designed by the researcher and 5 of them were selected to an in�depth interview to gain deeper information. The results of the questionnaire and interviews were analysed descriptively. The findings of this study showed that the majority of the students had average to good level of motivation in learning English. Most of them were dominantly affected by extrinsic motivation. Some internal factors which affected students’ intrinsic motivation strongly were interest, enjoyment, awareness of the importance of English, and desire to master English. Some external factors which influenced students’ extrinsic motivation significantly are teacher, English subject score, getting into reputable universities and getting a great job in the future. However, their motivation in learning English during the study-from-home policy were mainly affected by the loss of enjoyment in the learning process and the difficulties in understanding the materials during the time
