Abstract

Pronunciation is an essential aspect of speaking skills for every foreign language learners. Due to the different sound systems between English and Indonesian, many students find it difficult to pronounce some English sounds. The voiced and voiceless plosive sounds [b, d, g, p, t, k] in the initial, medial, and final positions are somehow difficult to be pronounced correctly. The study analyzed the students’ ability in pronouncing voiced and voiceless plosive sounds [b, d, g, p, t, k]. The study aims to investigate how well the fifth-semester students of English Education UNNES. The researcher held a pronunciation test to obtain the data. A descriptive qualitative method was used in this study. The data was then analyzed using the theory of Ellis (2003), which was identifying, describing, explaining, and evaluating. To determine the students’ achievement, the researcher used the level of criterion by Tinambunan. Based on the data analysis, the students’ ability in pronouncing voiced and voiceless plosive sounds [b, d, g, p, t, k] was categorized as excellent with an average percentage of 75%. While the dominant sounds that the students failed to pronounce were the sound [g] and [p].
