Abstract

English Education students are required to master language skills and components. One of language skills which are important to acquire is writing. One of the texts which is personal and familiar for students to write is Recount. There have not been many research conducted on students’ recount texts focus on Appraisal system. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the implementation of appraisal system in recount texts written by the fourth semester students 2017 year of academic in English Education study program. The writer used Martin and White (2005) appraisal system to analyze the recount texts. In this study the writer focuses on Attitudinal values. The data were collected by segmenting the recount texts into clauses and chunks. Afterwards, the writer analyzed and classified the attitudinal values found in the recount texts based on Martin and White (2005) categorizations. Next, the data were counted to find the dominant appraisal aspect and find how the students express their Affect, Judgments and Appreciations. There are 10 recount texts selected out of 27 recount texts written from one class. The findings show that from 281 clauses there are 303 Attitudinal values found in students’ recount texts. Among the three components, the most dominant aspect is Judgment with 113 values or 37,29%, followed by Affect with 112 values or 36.96%. The least component found in the students’ recount texts is Appreciation with 75 values or 25,74%. Appraisal resources in each aspect helps students express their emotions, opinions and evaluations in writing recount texts based on the purpose and the topic they choose.
