Abstract
In every teaching and learning process, teachers play an important role in transferring knowledge. However, to support teachers’ knowledge mastery, teachers need a good skill of communication. The objective of the study was to analyse the pre-service teachers of English Department students’ strategic competence in teaching English from the distance learning practice through desktop two-way audio/video model, due to the implementation of Distance Learning during the Covid-19 Pandemic. This study broke down the transcribed online teaching and learning process conducted by pre-service teachers of the English Department Universitas Negeri Semarang in their online teaching practices by employing discourse analysis. I used Celce-Murcia (1995) framework as the model in designing the worksheet for the research instrument. It found that not all of those categories in strategic competence were employed in the recorded distance learning practices. Instead, some subcategories had highly dominant occurrences. The percentage of subcategory of strategic competence’ occurrence in all of data collected were 3.1% in avoidance or reduction strategy, 46.1% in achievement or compensatory strategy, 40.3% in stalling or time gainingstrategy, 2.7% in self-monitoring strategy, and the rest 7.8% in interactionalstrategy. There were two strategies from different sub-categories, in which they arethe most strategies found in the data, namely gambit and code-switching strategies. The overall result showed that the profile of strategic competence employed by students and student teacher were not evenly distributed. There are still many sub-components of strategic competence that can be explored to help them facing the communication breakdown
