Abstract

This study aims to describe teaching techniques used by two English teachers in the SMK Negeri 1 Batang to increase the students' motivation their perceptions. This study was qualitative research using a case study as the research design. The observation was done in two different classes. Interviews were done with the teachers and two students from each classroom. I used observation sheets, interview questions, and document analysis worksheets as the instruments for collecting data. This study used within-method triangulation to make sure that the data were acceptable. I found that teacher, teaching technique, and class activities were related to enhancing students' motivation. As a result of the interview with the teachers, I noted various teaching techniques used in the class. The teachers used different teaching techniques. Those teachers added that to enhance motivation, they also evaluated the class. The students' point of view showed that they were interested in English but still found difficulties following the class because they had limited vocabulary and did not know the grammar structure. The interview with the students showed that they would be motivated when the teachers used enjoyable class activities, especially games. They claimed that the teachers should create an exciting environment and suggested using games or media to enjoy and follow the class with enthusiasm. Based on the result, I suggest that the teachers be more creative in designing and selecting teaching techniques to increase students' motivation and enthusiasm. Furthermore, the students also need to be more active in following the class to make a good engagement and environment
