Abstract

The forerunner of the Indonesian Army was formed on the basis of the foundation of three groups with different coaching backgrounds. The first group, namely the group that had participated in Dutch military training; second, the group that has followed Japanese military training; third, the group consisting of the people's From three groups, only the first and second groups have received professional military training. The first group received military training from the Netherlands by joining the Koninklijk Nederlandche Oos Indische Leger (KNIL) unit.and the second group received military training from Japan when they joined the Tentara Sukarela Pembela Tanah Air (PETA) unit. Related to this background, it becomes interesting to see how the military training has been carried out by the two groups. In this paper, the writer will explain about the military training which received by KNIL and PETA army, and then try to see a comparison between the two. This study uses the historical method with the first stage conducting a source search, where the primary source is used as the main reference. Primary sources were obtained by tracing contemporary newspaper records and autobiographical records from historical actors, in this case those who were directly involved in participating in KNIL and PETA training. The notes of contemporary newspaper records were obtained, such as Bataviaasch Niewsblaad, De Indische Courant, De Sumatra Post, Soerabaiasch Handelsblad from the Delpher site collection, and Asia Raya and Kan Po newspapers obtained from the National Library collection. This study shows that KNIL and PETA have differences in terms of training practices which can be classified into two, technical training and training culture. Related to the technical training, facts were found about the differences in terms of majors/training divisions, recruitment, classification, duration and material. Whereas, the training culture shows that KNIL adopted the western military which has a doctrine of military professionalism that separates themself from civilians, while PETA, which adopts Japanese culture, applies the Bushido Doctrine and the "remarkable trinity" where the army does not stand alone and must establish harmony with the people.
