Abstract

Punk is a subculture that was born in the 1970s in the United States. Although, actually, these designs or ideas have been around since the 1960s in Detroit by musical groups such as MC5. Punk emerged as a cultural counter to the social, cultural, and political dominance that was happening in America at that time. The do-it-yourself spirit of punk attracts young people who think that this subculture represents the souls of free and rebellious subjects. Over time, punk became part of young people's lifestyle. One of the golden eras of punk was the 1990s. In that era, punk rock landed on the world's top music charts, which were represented by music groups at that time, such as Nirvana, Blink-182, and Green Day. This era was also considered to be the phase that made punk a mainstream culture. So it was not surprising that in the 1990s, the influence of punk could reach the whole world, including Indonesia. Punk first appeared in Indonesia's major cities. Semarang as one of the big cities in Indonesia did not escape the presence of punk. The youth began to recognize punk started with grunge music from Nirvana on the album Nevermind in the early 1990s. After that, they began to recognize punk rock music from Green Day on the album Dookie. Besides listening to the music, they also look for literacy materials that discuss punk. Literacy materials such as music magazines are generally obtained from flea markets in Semarang. Apart from magazines, they also read independent creative media in the punk communities called “Zine”. The independent creative media itself generally discusses music, fashion, community, and social and political issues. Over time, towards the end of the 1990s, communities began to appear and accommodate members to interact with each other. The community that first emerged was the Punk Community in the Perhutani Building Area in 1997. However, the community that is known as the largest and most influential was the BI Community that was born in 1998. Apart from the birth of communities, punk music groups also emerged in the 1990s, such as Nihil, Ak-47, and Suckeatfruit. Towards the 2000s and above, the style of music, community, and fashion among punks in Semarang became more varied and dynamic.
