Abstract

This study uses historical research methods which include heuristics, source criticism, and historiography stages. This study aims to determine the emergence and development of the Indonesian National Party in Purworejo which had dominated the course of regional politics from 1946 to 1973. This research is also enriched with primary, secondary and other relevant sources. The results of this study explain that the Military Aggression carried out by the Dutch gave impetus to the debut of the PNI Purworejo branch so that its presence could be accepted and known by the local community because the ideology and goals of the party were in accordance with the conditions of the people at that time, this made the party gain a reputation the majority of the votes in the Purworejo area in the 1955 elections. In the local elections the PNI also succeeded in becoming the dominant party where they succeeded in making members and the people they supported to fill regional positions during the period 1946-1973. The presence of the PNI in Purworejo also provided developments for the region, one of which was in the field of education with the establishment of the Marhaenis School. However, after the G30S, the dominance of the Purworejo branch of the PNI began to be threatened because the central party was dragged into the problem and disrupted the activities of this branch of the PNI.
