Abstract

The development of libraries in Indonesia cannot be separated from the influence of culture. Libraries are institutions that manage collections of written works, printed works, and or recorded works in a professional manner with a standard system to meet the educational, research, preservation, information and recreational needs of the users. This study discusses the first state-owned library in Yogyakarta as a milestone in Indonesian literacy awareness in the period 1949- 1952. The method used in this research is a qualitative research method with a historical approach. Obtaining data obtained through observation and literature study. The results show that the history of the development of Indonesian libraries is the most important moment that should be preserved because this is the initial foundation for the formation of libraries and the literacy culture of the Indonesian people, especially in the Yogyakarta area. By looking at and knowing the historical background of the development of Indonesian libraries, this will be information about the involvement of the state regarding the great attention to the importance of building the nation's literacy. So that the reading culture continues to develop and play a role in educating the Indonesian generation in various periods and times through library media.
