Abstract

The study aimed to find out improving students’ vocabulary mastery using Riddle game. Classroom Action Research (CAR) was used to perform this study. The subject was a class of the eighth grade students at SMPN 3 Semarang which consisted of 32 students. The data were gathered through qualitative and quantitative. The results showed that students' vocabulary mastery improved, as evidenced by the mean pre-test score of 68.2, the mean post-test I score of 74.6, and the mean score of pot-test cycle II score of 89.3. In addition, seven (21.8%) students passed the pre-test for Minimum Mastery. Meanwhile, 17 (55.1%) students passed Minimum Mastery Criterion in cycle I, and 31 (96.9%) students passed Minimum Mastery Criterion in cycle II, so the success criteria was achieved. Then, based on the results of the questionnaire, it showed that the teaching and learning process through Riddle game had improved positive responses. There were 50.32% of students had positive responses in pre�questionnaire. After then, there were 96.89% of students had positive reponses in post�questionnaire. Furthermore, the results of the observation and interview revealed that the students were motivated in the teaching and learning process during the Riddle game implementation.
