Abstract

The PORO kanji application is an android-based kanji learning media. In this application, there are 2500 kanji words, 231 topics from beginner to advanced level. This application can be used by Japanese learners to learn kanji independently, especially at this time distance learning is still being carried out due to the Covid-19 virus. Besides being able to be used independently, the PORO kanji application can also increase the effectiveness in reading basic kanji, especially for first year Japanese education program at Semarang State University. However, not all students can follow this online learning smoothly. This can cause the effectiveness of kanji mastery in terms of student reading to decrease because there are still many students who find it difficult to distinguish the same kanji forms and have almost similar meanings. Based on these observations, the right learning media is very important to use when online learning is carried out. This raises the author's thought to use the PORO kanji application learning media as a basic kanji learning tool. The existence of the PORO kanji application is expected to improve the ability to read basic kanji first year Japanese education program at the Semarang State University in 2020. This study aims to determine whether there is an effect or effectiveness of the PORO kanji application on the ability to read basic kanji of first year Japanese at the Semarang State University, as well as student responses after using the application. This research is quantitative research using an experimental approach with a research design that is Quasi-Experimental Design or quasi-experimental in the form of a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The population in this study were all Japanese Language Education level I Unnes students who were taking the Hyoki (basic kanji) course. The sampling technique in this study used a saturated sampling technique, which is a technique used when the population is relatively small. The samples of this study were 10 students each from first class as the experimental class and second class as the control class. The data analysis technique used comparative statistics which was used to test the hypothesis and to find out whether there was a significant difference between the effect of the PORO starch application on the ability to read basic kanji, using the t-test (t-table test). The results showed the average post-test score in the experimental class was 92.83 and the control class average was 75.33. Calculations using the t-test formula obtained the results of 6.38 with dB = N-1(60-1 = 59). So with DB 59 is 2.00 with 5% accuracy. From the results of the questionnaire obtained, the percentage of each item in the questionnaire ranges from 71.5% - 88.5%. This shows that the effect of the PORO Kanji Application is effectively used to improve the basic kanji reading skills of Semarang State University students.
