Abstract

Slavery is a condition in which an individual is enslaved by another. It allows people to buy, sell, and own a man as property. This slavery has influences on society. One literary work that presents about slavery is The Known World by Edward P. Jones. Therefore, the objectives of this study are: 1) to describe slavery issue in Edward P. Jones‘s novel The Known World and 2) to explain the social impacts of slavery on the community described in Edward P. Jones‘ novel The Known World. This study is a descriptive qualitative study by using the structuralism theory of Levi-Strauss. Through the structural analysis, the data is collected to get interpretations. At last, this study results that first, slavery is described as a condition that is normal to be practiced by people and supported by the law at that time. It can be conducted by both the whites and the blacks toward the black slaves. They differ by their status as masters and slaves. Slavery has only given benefits to the masters while the slaves are poor. Second, the social impacts of slavery are social class differentiation; the upper class which is represented by the white slave-owners, the middle class which is represented by other whites such as the sheriffs, the patrollers, and poor whites, the lower class is free black slave-owners, and the lowest class is black slaves. Restrictions for the blacks and rebellions in the form of runaways are also results of slavery.
