Abstract

One of the most important aspects of human life is language. Language existence is not axis just in one single pattern but there are many languages that represent the culture according to the consensus of each social group. English and Indonesian languages have different cultures and which influences the language used. From the differences described above, it is required the process of translation. Translation is general term that refers to the removal of reflections and ideas from one source language (SL) and target language (TL). This study analysed translation strategies which is used by the translator for translating English novel entitled The Chocolate Box Girls: Marshmallow Skye into Indonesian version. The objective of the study were to identify the translation strategy in translating idioms found in the novel. This study was qualitative. The data analysis was done by comparing the original novel and the Indonesian novel. The result of the study showed 230 data of idiom. The strategies employed by the translator to translate idiom: using an idiom similar meaning and dissimilar form, using an idiom similar meaning and form, translation by paraphrase, translation by omission, and literal translation. 79 data were translated using idiom similar meaning and form, 28 data were translated using idiom similar meaning but dissimilar form, 69 data were translated using translation by paraphrase, 36 data were found translated using translation by omission, and 18 data were translated using literal translation. The result of this research indicates that the translator used more same meaning and lexical items translating as source language (ISMF strategy) to convey the meaning from SL into TL.
