Abstract

Madame Bovary is a novel about woman who is feeling bored with her husband and marriage, decides to pursue her dream. This study used psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud (1998) in the topographic model, which divides the psyche into the three parts: the id, the ego, and the superego. The id, the ego, and the superego is a model of the human psyche that described about human mental interaction. The aims of this study is to finding out the id, ego, and superego from Emma Bovary. Besides that, it also finds the causes and effects of the actions committed by the main character (Emma Bovary) as reflected in Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert. This research was using qualitative data to describe the result of the study. This study used primary and secondary data. The primary data were taken from novel Madame Bovary Written by Gustave Flaubert. The secondary data source was from books, journals, articles, and the internet. The data of the study were taken in the form of words, phrases, sentences, and utterances related to the study. The data were collected by reading the novel thoroughly, identifying, and reporting. The result founds that Emma is more controlled by her id’s drive than by her superego. She tried to satisfy her id’s drive in seeking for ideal love life, it is caused by her illusion of love from romance books she consumed and her unfulfilled needs in her marriage. Her ego has supported the id to satisfy what she needs. The ego has made Emma committing an affair with two other men. It is also found that Emma’s actions were causes by her romanticized view of love life and her dissatisfaction of her marriage with Charles. The effects of her actions were her growing desires and finally committing betrayal towards her marriage with her husband and taking her own life to escape the consequences of her piled up problems.
