Abstract

This study aimed to describe student teachers’ perception on the use of synchronous and asynchronous e-learning tools in English Language Teaching (ELT). The tools used by most of the research population are WhatsApp and Zoom as synchronous tools while Google Classroom and YouTube as asynchronous tools. There were 30 participants from English Education students of Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) in academic year 2017. The study adopted Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) by Davis which focused on technology acceptance perception. An online questionnaire was conducted to get the data. The collected data were tabulated and interpreted descriptively. The findings presented under four headings: perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, attitude towards usage, and behavioral intention to use synchronous and asynchronous tools. The result show more than 60% of participants perceive that WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Classroom and YouTube are easy to use and useful to enhance their jobs performance. In addition, more than 60% of participants have positive attitude towards usage of these tools and plan to use these tools in their future teaching. In other words, most of student teachers show positive perception towards the use of the tools and consider them as suitable e-learning tools in ELT.
