Abstract

Classroom management affects how the students learn which decides the results of the learning outcome. Ever since the switch from face-to-face learning to remote learning during the pandemic, English teachers in SMA N 1 Karangtengah had to adapt their online classroom management. Therefore, this research was conducted to: (1) analyze how English teachers of SMA N 1 Karangtengah Demak implement their online classroom management, (2) find out the challenges faced by English teachers of SMA N 1 Karangtengah Demak during implementation of online classroom management, and (3) find out how English teachers of SMA N 1 Karangtengah Demak reflect on their online classroom management. To answer these questions, this qualitative case study conducted interviews and observation, as well as distributed questionnaires. 3 English teachers and 55 students of SMA N 1 Karangtengah Demak were selected as the research participants. The findings found out that English teachers of SMA N 1 Karangtengah Demak had been using the combination of WhatsApp, Zoom and Schoology to have both synchronous and asynchronous learning activities in their online classroom. There were several challenges found during managing the English online classroom such as the inability to control the students and to recognize the students, less freedom in delivering the materials, teachers’ lack of consistency, and students’ lack of participations. As the management had not been implemented effectively enough, the research suggested (1) the school to find the better and more convenient LMS, (2) the teacher to implement synchronous learning more using WhatsApp to discuss, and to be more consistent in their online classroom management.
