Abstract

Although speaking is regarded as the most critical language skill in learning a foreign or second language, it is skill that is also difficult to master. It is because speaking is the way to communicate with others and it needs combination of the knowledge in the four basic skills. The majority of English learners who are unable to speak orally in English attest to this. Speaking becomes a serious problem since there is speaking anxiety that affects students‟ performance in English speaking either in traditional classroom or in online learning. During the Covid-19 pandemic, speaking anxiety tends to be found in online learning because students believe that English is a difficult subject and they do not have enough time to practice their speaking in online class. In responding to the problem, this research investigates students‟ anxiety in speaking English during online learning due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. This is a case study conducted at the 8th grade students of SMP N 24 Semarang in the academic year 2021/2022 where the Covid-19 pandemic hit. This study aims to find out the type of anxiety that exists among students, the factors caused speaking anxiety and the strategies to overcome anxiety based on the student‟s perspective. The data collection for this study was done using a mixed-method research methodology, which mixes qualitative and quantitative research. The questionnaire was used to determine the anxious students. After that, the researcher used purposive sampling to choose students who will be interviewed. The interview was used to find out student‟s perspective about the factors that caused students speaking anxiety and strategies to overcome speaking anxiety. The study reveals that speaking anxiety during online learning is typically state anxiety; which means anxiety due to being overwhelmed by certain situations. They are; fear of making mistake either in pronunciation or grammatical errors, the feeling of shame and fear of teacher, students‟ belief that English is difficult, fear of being corrected or getting negative evaluation, students‟ insecurities of Javanese accent in English speaking, students‟ lack of preparation, vocabularies, and confidence. In addition, to those types of anxiety, this study reveals that students‟ employ five ways to overcome their fear of public speaking.namely relaxation, preparation, peer seeking, positive thinking, and resignation.
