Abstract

This final project presented a study examining the effectiveness of using Instagram as a media to improve students’ speaking skill: a case of students grade XI of MAN 1 Banyumas. The objective of this study was to find out whether Instagram was effective to improve students’ speaking skill at eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Banyumas. In order to achieve the objective of the study, the researcher conducted a quasi- experimental study with the pre-test and post test design. The population of this study was eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Banyumas in the academic year 2020/2021. The researcher did not choose the sample randomly. As the sample of this research, the researcher decided that the XI IPA 1 as the experimental group and XI IPA 2 as the control group. The experimental group was taught by using Instagram while the control group was taught by using conventional method. Test was used as the instrument of the study. The result of the test was analyzed using t-test formula. The result of the hypothesis showed that there was a a significant difference effect on the students’ speaking skill between those who were taught by using Instagram and those who were not taught by using Instagram. It could be proven from the result of t (4.370) which was higher than t table (1.997). Another result of the study showed that the mean score of the experimental group after given the treatments was 73.62 while the control group was 67.35. It means that the score of the the students who were taught by using Instagram was higher than the students who were taught by using conventional method. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that Instagram is effective to improve students’ speaking skill. It can probably be one of the solutions to solve the students’ difficulty in speaking English. Therefore, the active participation from the teacher and students were needed to maximize the use of Instagram as media to improve students’ speaking skill.
