Abstract

Speaking is a productive skill that involves two people or more, in whom the participants are the listener and the speaker. Therefore, in speaking, both of them have to understand the other. Word stress is important because the listener can not understand what the speaker says if the speaker misplaces the stress. However, many English Department students are wrong in placing the stress and do not even use it in their speaking. The objective of this study was to find out the stress errors that English students made in their pronunciation of two-syllable words. The subject of this study was a class of third-semester students from the English Department at Universitas Negeri Semarang, and the researcher took 20 students. This research used a qualitative method. The data instruments used to collect the data were interviews and pronunciation tests. The findings of this study showed that the highest percentage of errors was from the category of two-syllable words with the stress placement are on the last syllables. The highest error was at two-syllable words, with the stress placement is on the last. It was the word “research” with 100% errors. Moreover, the students’ correct percentage was a total of 77.5%. This problem occurs because the students only estimate the stress placement without completely knowing word stress rules.
