Abstract

Communication is an important thing in everyday life that aims to convey messages to other people with a specific purpose. As well as communications from the announcers' Railway Station that informed to passengers. However, pronunciation errors in vowels will occur frequently and may cause misunderstanding. This study aims to obtain vowel errors from the announcers and to describe the factors that cause these vowel errors to occur. The participants in this study were 15 announcers at the Yogyakarta Railway station. This study applies the qualitative descriptive method because it is carried out by interview and direct observation that the results in a descriptive explanation. There are 11 vowels that cause the most errors, those were vowels /ə/, /ɛ/, /ʌ/, /i:/, /æ/, /ɔ:/, /ɪ/, /aʊ/, /eɪ/, /ɔ/ and /ʊ/. The result of this research is 27,1% with the good category. The highest error was at vowel /æ/ with 71,7% and the lowest was at vowel /ʊ/, /ɔ/, and /ʌ/ with 0%. This happens because the announcers unfamiliar with the use of the vowel in the sentence. Meanwhile, with the results of the interview, the role of the mother tongue is important.
