Abstract

The emphasis in education has shifted from teacher-centered instruction to student-centered instruction in recent years. As a result, several studies have been carried out to explore factors that can influence learners' learning processes. Affective factors, rather than intelligence, teaching process, or time spent studying, are thought to have a greater influence on language learning. Self efficacy is one of the factors in affective problems. Self-efficacy is a person's assessment of his or her capacity to complete a task using the skills that they have. The relationship between students' self-efficacy and their mastery of English speaking skills is investigated in this study. Because of its relevance, the researcher identified speaking as one of the primary language abilities that plays a larger role than other skills. Furthermore, being capable of communicating in English is necessary in this age of globalization. As a result, the researcher looked at the students' level of self-efficacy, their English speaking ability, and whether there was a significant correlation between their level of self-efficacy and their mastery of English speaking skill. This kind of research has been done a lot, but in this place, at SMAN 2 Demak this research needs to be done considering that there is a problem that arises in the form of students' lack of courage in speaking English when in fact they are able to do it. This research was conducted at eleventh grade students of SMAN 2 Demak in the academic year of 2020/2021. The sample of this research was 4 classes or around 138 students. The analysis of Pearson Product Moment was used in this study as a quantitative method. If both of the variables are interval and the data source is the same, this form of analysis is a technique to look for correlation and born out hypothesis of two variables. The researcher used SPSS 18 to calculate the data. The outcome of both calculations yielded the same result of 0.867. 0.867 is used in a strong relationship based on the interpretation of Correlation Coefficient (r) Pearson Product Moment. In other words, there is a significant and strong correlation between students' self-efficacy and their mastery of English speaking skill.
