Abstract

Politeness has strong relation when it comes to interacting with other humans. Due to the fact of how positive politeness points out friendliness and appreciation, the writer was interested to see the positive politeness strategies used by a person when communicating with a party from the same and different country; United States and Korea. An American viewable radio show host, Zach Sang, having interviews with an American singer Ariana Grande, and a Korean band DAY6 were observed regarding this matter. Thus, this research aims to (1) find out the positive politeness strategies used by Zach Sang in interviewing the American artist, (2) find out the positive politeness strategies used by Zach Sang in interviewing the Korean artists, and (3) explain what factors affect the difference of the positive politeness strategies used by Zach Sang in interviewing the American and Korean artists. This research used descriptive qualitative approach and discourse analysis was employed as the method of the research. The data was in the form of utterances spoken by Zach Sang that had been transcribed into written utterances by the writer. The instruments include the writer as the main instrument as well as data sheets. The results show that there is a difference in terms of most used strategy of positive politeness types employed by Zach Sang when communicating with the American and the Korean artists. Additionally, six strategies were not found on the American dataset, while on the Korean dataset, three strategies were found absent. Moreover, the factors affecting the strategy pick were found to be The Payoffs and The Circumstances.
