Abstract

This research analyzed the translation techniques and the resulted accuracy in students’ abstracts translation. The purposes of this research were to investigate the translation techniques and measure the resulted accuracy in students’ abstracts translation. The object of this study was the three different abstracts from law, economics, and law research which were translated by the fifth semester students of Indonesian-English Translation class of English Education UNNES. This study employed qualitative research. The researcher used translation techniques classified by Molina and Albir for determining the translation techniques used by students, while Nababan’s quality assessment used to analyse the accuracy of the translation. The study was done by comparing the English abstracts and the Indonesian abstracts translated by student translators in order to find out the translation techniques used. The accuracy analysis involved three raters to assess the translation accuracy of the translation. The result of this study showed that there were six translation techniques used by the student translators which are borrowing (56.62%), calque (17.70%), literal translation (15.64%), transposition (7.13%), reduction (1.78%), and modulation (1.51%). Furthermore, the rating accuracy showed that the students’ translation was 42.52% accurate. While the relation between translation techniques and resulted accuracy showed that borrowing belongs to good technique because it has the highest number of accurate data among other techniques (78.94%). While reduction belongs to problematic technique used by the student translators because the number of inaccurate data is the highest among other techniques (7.69%).
