Abstract

This research analysed the use of teachers’ direct feedback to improve students’ mastery of past tense in writing. The purposes of this study were to: 1) describe how is the teacher’s direct feedback applied in the process of improving students’ accurate use of past tense in writing, 2) find out the extent to which teacher’s direct feedback improve the tenth-grade students’ accurate use of past tense in writing, and 3) describe how the tenth-grade students perceive teacher’s direct feedback in writing. The method used in this study is a Classroom Action Research which was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four steps; planning, acting, observing and reflecting. This research was done online because of Corona Virus-19. The qualitative data were analysed through reporting the results from observation, questionnaire and field note. The quantitative data were analysed by comparing the students’ average scores of tests in the preliminary study, cycle one and cycle two. The subjects of the study were the tenth-grade students of SMK N 2 Kota Cirebon in the academic year 2019/2020. The research findings showed that the students’ average scores have increased significantly from 4.1 into 8.1 because they only made a few mistakes in their writing products and it makes them happy and enthusiastic when receiving teacher’s direct feedback on their writing products. In conclusion, teacher’s direct feedback could improve the tenth-grade students’ accurate use of past tense in writing recount text.
