Abstract

This study aims to compare the British and Indian English accents in the film entitled Outsourced (2006) that tells the story of a worker from the USA who is transferred to work at a branch office in India so which poses various cultural and language problems. This paper discusses how Indian people speak English. This is a qualitative study with a qualitative descriptive method to analyze data. Data was collected from the movie, i.e. the movie itself and the script. The study is focused on the analysis aspects of consonant, vowel, and diphthong pronunciations. The results showed that the authors attempted to present a way of pronouncing British and Indian English accents that made Indians sound very distinctive in speaking English in the outsourced film (2006). This demonstrates the varieties in English, which mirrors the condition in Indonesia. Therefore, it implies an understanding English in Indonesia has its varieties in accents due to the various cultural background and local languages like the one in India. The result showed that in the pronunciation test, most actors in that movie substituted English sounds with the existing sounds in their native language (Indian English Accent). For the English consonant sound [θ], the actors substituted it with /ʈ/ (retroflex) sound. Indian retroflex voice is the main characteristic of their accent and it is very popular. In addition, from the movie, it can be concluded that the actor's pronunciation is different, then it is mostly caused by the culture and their mother tongue.
