Abstract
Refusal and acceptance strategies are one of the speech acts that are performed by people all around the world to maintain the communication. People always do speech acts of refusal and acceptance in daily conversation with other people, because refusal and acceptance are inevitable. This study aimed to explain the types of refusal and acceptance strategies used by Javanese students as EFL learners in English Department at Universitas Negeri Semarang. It also focused on revealing the differences between male and female Javanese EFL learners when using refusal and acceptance strategies. In this study, the data were taken from 20 students of English Department at Universitas Negeri Semarang. This study was a qualitative research. The data of this study were the realization of refusals and acceptances performed by Javanese EFL students. Based on the theory of refusal and acceptance strategies proposed by Aziz (2000), the findings showed that male students used hesitation and lack of enthusiasm, offer an alternative, postponement, put the blame on a third party, general acceptance of an offer but giving no detail, general acceptance with excuse, giving reason and explanation, and comments without exemplification as their realization of refusal strategies. The researcher also found that male students used 4 kinds of acceptance strategies. General yes or IFID, a rhetorical response, acceptance with reservation, non�committal response, and comments without exemplification are used by male students in performing their acceptance strategies. Meanwhile, female students used hesitation and lack of enthusiasm, offer an alternative, postponement, put the blame on a third party, general acceptance of an offer but giving no detail, giving reason and explanation, complaining and criticizing, conditional yes, and questioning the justification of a request. For expressing their acceptance strategies, female students used general yes or IFID, expression of solidarity, a rhetorical response, acceptance with reservation and non-committal responses. In conclusion, male and female Javanese EFL students at Universitas Negeri Semarang shared similarities in doing refusal and acceptance strategies.
