Abstract

Translating literary works, particularly in translating proper names is challenging for certain reasons. Most of them are not simply identifying labels but rather have some their own particular meanings. It results in some significant consequences and considerations in the rendering process of translation. This research attempted to find out the translation techniques used in translating proper names in The Lord of the Rings: The Towers as the original English novel after being translated into Indonesian version of The Lord of the Rings: Dua Menara published by Gramedia Pustaka Utama by Gita Yuliani K. The objectives of this research were to describe the choice of translation techniques used in the novel. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The translation techniques analysis was done by using Fernandes’ (2006) classification of translation techniques. The total number of 342 proper names in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers novel is the data. The percentage of each technique is as follows (1) copying technique used 221 times or represents 64.6%, (2) Rendition used 106 times or represtents 31%, (3) substitution techniques used 8 times or represents 2.3%, (4) Addition technique used 6 times or represents 1.8%. The rest of the six techniques were not used by the translator. Those techniques are recreation, deletion, transcription, transposition, phonological replacement, and conventionality.
