Abstract

The level of carbon emissions can describe how the environmental quality of a country is. Population growth can have an effect on increasing carbon emissions in a country, the higher the population growth, the higher the carbon emissions produced. Likewise with economic growth, energy consumption, and growth in the number of vehicles. This study aims to analyze the effect of population growth, economic growth, energy consumption, and growth in the number of vehicles on carbon emissions in Indonesia. This study uses data in Indonesia from 1986—2019. The method is multiple linear regression analysis with Error Correction Model (ECM) approach. The results indicate that in the short term there is no independent variable that has a significant effect on carbon emissions. In the long term, population growth has a significant negative relationship with carbon emissions. Economic growth and energy consumption have a significant positive relationship to carbon emissions. The growth in the number of vehicles has an insignificant relationship to carbon emissions. Based on the results, the authors provide suggestions for people and Government, which are expected to be able to limit the expenditure of carbon emissions each year for the prevention of environmental damage. Further researchers can pay more attention to the types of vehicles that are calculated and use other proxies such as industry in the transportation sector.
