Abstract

Verticulture technique are cultivating agriculture system that placed vertically. This concept is very suitable to be developed in urban areas have narrow yards. In the effort to improve family independence and food security during Covid-19 pandemic, the cultivation training with verticultural farming was conducted to residents of Bukit Sukorejo Housing, Gunungpati-Semarang. This activity will also increase production activities from the home, that it supports the government's recommendation to prevent the spread of Covid-19. The activity method was carried out by training, implementation and assistance. The activity has been carried out in April - July 2020, covering verticulture knowledge, selection of suitable plants, maintenance and harvest management. Two types of verticulture implemented, i.e hydroponic installation model, and the multilevel rack model for potted plants with soil media. The result showed that the knowledge of the participants increased significantly (t-test; α <0.05). The selected plants to be implemented are water spinach, mustard greens, lettuce, chili and herbal plants. In this activity it was concluded that all participants were able to adopt knowledge and applied in managing seedlings, maintaining up to the first harvest. Training and assistance in verticultural farming have proven to be able to empower residents to produce vegetables independently.
