This research dealth with the students’ perceptions of English teachers using Indonesian for instructional purposes. In this research, L1 refers to the teacher’s ability to use Bahasa Indonesia and know when the right time to use it in teaching English. This research is a qualitative approach that used the triangulation method by matching all of the data. The findings showed that the students supported both the teacher on the use of L1 in teaching English. Students are interested in learning English because it is fun; although English as a foreign language they tried to use English in the English classroom. The students agreed the use of Bahasa Indonesia help them to improve their English skills. It is required in the English classroom because of the students have difficulty in learning English, especially on the lack of the vocabulary mastery. They also believed that the use of two languages (Bahasa Indonesia-English) help them to understand the teachers’ explanation easily. Based on findings it can be suggested that firstly, for the students, they need to improve their vocabulary mastery because vocabulary has an essential role in learning English. Secondly, the teacher should know the right time to use Bahasa Indonesia in the English classroom, such as in giving instruction or explanations. Thirdly, for another researcher who has the same interest in this topic, this study may be a relevant previous study.
