Abstract

This study is based on experimental research aiming to examine the effectiveness of snakes and ladders game as a strategy for teaching irregular verbs and examine whether there is a significant different between students who were taught by using snakes and ladders game and those who were taught by using conventional method. The subjects of the study were the students of VIII C, as the control group, and VIII F, as the experimental group, of SMP N 3 Kajen in the academic year of 2018/2019, consisting of 40 students, chosen by using non-random sampling. The study applied a quasi-experimental design. The experimental group was taught by using snakes and ladders game and the control group was taught by using conventional method. The data were gathered through pre-test and post-test, then analyzed by using SPSS. The results of the study indicated that the experimental group (76.75) had better score than the control group (67.00). The t-test computation also showed that the tvalue is higher than the ttable (3.220 > 2.024). It can be concluded that there was a significant difference between the students who were taught by using snakes and ladders game and those who were taught by using conventional teaching method. Therefore, according to the post-test result and t-test calculation, it could be proven that snakes and ladders game was effective to be used in teaching iregular verbs. It is suggested that snakes and ladders game can be an alternative strategy for teaching irregular verbs.
