Abstract

The phenomena of using code-switching and code-mixing of language have become a trend of speaking by mixing two languages frequently especially in public figure societies. It can be seen on their social media platforms. This study is aimed to find out the code-switching and code-mixing types based on Poplack’s theory (1980) and Muysken’s theory (2000), identify the functions based on Marasigan’s theory (1983), and determine the reasons based on Hoffman’s theory (1991) of Deddy Corbuzier’s utterance during podcasting. This study used a qualitative text analysis method. The data was taken from the YouTube podcast of Deddy Corbuzier. The researcher transcribed the podcast conversations then investigated and analyzed the required data related to the aims of the study. The result of code-switching types showed that intrasentential switching was frequently used about 49%, intersentential switching was often used about 43%, and tag switching was infrequently used about 8%. Then, insertion was mostly used in the code-mixing types about 88%, while congruent lexicalization and alternation were infrequently used about 10% and 2%. Moreover, there found six functions in this study i.e 16 quotations, 15 addressee specifications, 13 repetitions, 9 interjections, 15 objectivization and personalization, and 123 facilities of expression. Additionally, the researcher found that Deddy used all of the reasons according to Hoffman’s theory. In short, Deddy used to implement code-switching and code-mixing on YouTube podcasts. It is important for knowing the language as well as the meaning conveyed by the host in order to understand the main of what the podcast discussed.
