Abstract

This study analyzed society’s symbols of behavior towards cancer survivors in John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars. The aims of this study are to know society’s symbols of behavior towards cancer survivors and to explain how the meaning of the symbols of society’s behavior impacted to the cancer survivors. This study used descriptive qualitative method by identifying any signs of society’s behavior and impacts of society’s symbols of behavior on cancer survivors’ behavior. The data were collected by reading, identifying, inventorying, and interpreting using semiotics theory of Charles Sanders Peirce. The results of this study are first, symbols of behavior of the society are described in several characteristics of society. The characteristics of society appears in the novel through embedded signs. They are conflict, interdependence, cooperation, likeness, and sociability. Second, characteristics in society is a basic principle of human life in living their life in society. In this case, society existence is important to anyone eventhough not all society’s behavior is good. Every characteristic in society brings positive and negative impacts toward the one who involve in it. One of the most important ways to keep the society safe or society brings positive impacts for every people is to maintain each other’s ego so that all the characteristics in society, both good or bad, can be done in balance.
