In this era, there are two types of communications. The first one is direct communication, and the second one is online communication. In the online communication, there is an absence of nonlinguistic cues such as facial expression and body language. Therefore, emojis will help to fill the gap. With emojis, people hope that while not communicating face-to-face, the other person still understands their feelings, ideas, and impressions, which emojis make the communication useful and understandable. Therefore, this study aims to find out the most frequent emojis used when communicating through WhatsApp online communication between students and lecturers and analyze the factors contributing to student’s choice of emoji. This study simply used the qualitative research. the data were taken UNNES English students 2017’s WhatsApp chats as the main source. the researcher describes the emojis that are classified into devices of modesty, hedging devices, to soften requests, positive politeness strategies, in rapport building, humor, to help convey emotion, emphatic use, and lexical use based on Kavanagh’s (2010) classification. It is used to know why the students use emojis in triggering politeness when communicating to their lecturers through WhatsApp online communication
