Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the student's ability to use the simple past tense in writing recount text. The use of Past Tenses is unavoidable, whether in writing, reading, or speaking. Despite the fact that the simple past tense is one of the tenses that students learn in school, it can be confusing, and several students in the object of this study, that is in eighth-grader students at MTs Darussalam Subah, make errors in some exercises. This study is conducted since there is because there has been no previous study that analyzes the student's ability to use the simple past tense in writing recount text on the object of this study. The type of this study is descriptive qualitative. The population or research subjects in this study were eighth-grader students at MTs Darussalam Subah in the 2020/2021 academic year. The sample was determined using cluster sampling and selects VIII C as the study's sample, which includes thirty-one students. The data that were collected using documentation, test, and questionnaire, were then analyzed using qualitative data analysis. From the analysis of this study, it was found that the types of errors that students make in the use of verbal and nominal sentences in recount text are mostly errors in the form of misformation (57.57%); omission (22.94); additions (09.09%); and misordering (10.38%).
